Barcelona plans to bring at least two attackers and two defenders as they want to help Lionel Messi enjoy his final years at the Camp Nou.

Sport reports that Barcelona want to build a new team around Messi and are preparing to sign four players for next season.

More from Everything Barca

The clash against Real Madrid showcased that despite having the best possible midfield trio with Sergio Busquets, Frankie de Jong and Arthur Melo, Barca are struggling to crack the opposition’s defense.

Despite the injuries to Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele, the notion is that even with Antoine Greizmann upfront, Messi needs more support to continue playing competitively for the remainder of his playing days at Camp Nou.

The 32-year-old had a relatively quiet night as per his standards and was left alone to attack against Los Blancos. He had a couple of chances but was quickly pressured by the likes of Casemiro and Raphaël Varane and failed to score against Thibaut Courtois.

Blaugrana’s board are aware of the weakness in the current squad and are planning to bring in experienced reinforcement next season. Plans for a new center-back to play alongside either Gerrard Pique, Clement Lenglet or Samuel Umtiti, along with a right-back is the current priority to strengthen the defensive line.

While the Spanish giants have lots of options in the midfield with Riqui Puig and Álex Collado both looking for their first team minutes, their attack is struggling with injuries and inconsistent performances. The club have already signed Francisco Trincão from Braga for next season but the 20-year-old’s performance this season will dictate his future in Spain.

The Spanish champions are planning to continue their search to bring a new No. 9 to be the long term replacement to Suarez with either Lautaro Martinez or Timo Werner as the likely candidates.

Sport also names Neymar to make a possible return especially after many reports claiming Messi and Suarez are demanding this particular move.

It is a good sign to know that the board are well aware of the problems in the current squad but it remains to be seen if the arrival of Quique Setien will be enough to see this side win either the La Liga or the Champions League this season.
