Lionel Messi has shocked the world after urging that the current Barcelona squad must improve significantly to have any chance at the Champions League glory.

Messi has gone out and disagreed with boss Quique Setien about Barcelona’s chances at this season’s Champions League campaign. The Argentine international insists that the current squad must elevate their performance in order to have any chance.

More from Everything Barca

The Spanish giants have recently resumed player training with the hopes of securing the La Liga this season ahead of arch-rivals Real Madrid who trail only two points behind. La Liga is reportedly set to restart in July with this year’s Champions League campaign being suspended until further notice.

Barca were set to face Napoli in their second leg fixture after finishing the first clash in a 1-1 draw at Stadio San Paolo on the 26th of February. Messi now claims that he does not share the same views as coach Setien when it comes to their chances at European glory.

"“I never doubted the squad we have and I have no doubt that we can win all that remains, but not by playing in the way we were playing,” Messi told Sports (Goal)"

Blaugrana captain insisted that he understands what it takes to win a tough tournament like the Champions League having won it four times already and the current way of the club is not sufficient to beat the likes of Liverpool.

"“Now, everyone has their opinion and they are all very respectable. Mine is based on the fact that I was lucky to play the Champions League every year and I know that it is not possible to win it by playing as we have been playing. Perhaps Setien misunderstood.” He continued"

Setien has faced massive challenges since his arrival this season with multiple injuries causing a major setback for the Spanish coach. Both Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez were out for the majority of the season, affecting Lionel Messi’s ability to perform his best.

The shutdown caused by the ongoing COVID-19 has given the squad ample time to recover from their hectic schedule due to the lack of available players.

"“This break may end up benefiting us, but we are going to see if they can start the competitions and there we will leave doubts because we will check the level that we have or can reach when we start,” Leo continued."

The coronavirus crisis is going to affect the player’s mentality and it remains to be seen how much it has impacted the Barca players but much to the relief of Cules, Messi is looking forward to the competition and feels physically fit for the challenge.

"“Physically I feel very well. I was training at home these days and I think it helped me to keep fit.”"
