Gustavo caught the attention of Barca after his dominating performance in Brazil’s Under-20 cup competition, Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior, which led the Catalan giants to construct an agreement with Maia’s parent club, Sao Paulo, for the option of signing him before the end of June 2020.
The Spanish side paid 1 million euros for this purchase option with Liverpool recently reported to have been ready to pounce on the player had Barca decided against his signing. Blaugrana can make him their permanent player if they pay an additional 3.5 million euros before the end of this month.
Maia’s representative is optimistic that the Catalans will exercise this option,
"“We are sure Barca will complete the purchase, there was already a signal from the club and [on Monday] Maia started private Spanish lessons to get more prepared. Other clubs came to us in the last few months but he never had any doubt, he always wanted Barca.” Danilo Silva told Radio TransamericaSource Goal"
Barca are yet to make official contact with the Brazilian side as Sao Paulo’s Sporting Director, Alexandre Passaro, confirms that they still have to hear from the Spanish side.
"“Whether he will go to Barca or not, we can’t be sure, because they have until June 30 to notify us and they still haven’t,” said Passaro. The last time I spoke to them they said everything is very uncertain” Passaro said."
Maia has the potential of becoming the next big Brazilian star at Camp Nou after Neymar and can take guidance from previous legendary Brazilian players such as Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Romario de Souza to write his name among Camp Nou’s most iconic South Americans in the future.
Should Barca spend the 3.5 million euros to sign the talented forward?
