Lionel Messi is due for a contract renewal at Barcelona this month.

Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, is planning to renew Lionel Messi’s contract within a couple of weeks with COPE network’s El Partidazo reporting that a meeting will be held next week.

More from Everything Barca

The Catalan giants are refusing to comment on the matter as no meeting has been held between the two parties but within the dressing room, there is a sense that the club captain will renew when the negotiations begin.

The coronavirus pandemic has altered the negotiation approach as initially, Barca will now contact Leo to discuss the general framework of his new contract with more concrete negotiations to be held later. The pandemic has caused salary cuts across the whole team thus the club needs to wait until their financial situation improves in order to make a proper offer.

Messi will be crucial for what’s coming

La Liga is also returning next week and the Blaugrana board does not want to distract their players by starting negotiations. They want Leo to be completely focused on the task in hand that is winning as many of the remaining 11 La Liga fixtures along with being prepared for the Champions League clash against Napoli.

It was reported earlier that the clause that allowed the Argentine to leave Camp Nou for free if he so chooses had expired but in reality, the club and country captain have until the 10th of June to make that decision. It is clear though that Messi does not want to exercise this option as he has confirmed in countless interviews that he desires to win many more trophies at the club.

How many more years will Leo remain at Barca?
