Barcelona star misses team training after breaching social distancing rules

Barcelona right-back Nelson Semedo misses team training after being spotted attending a birthday party breaching social distancing regulations.

More from Everything Barca

La Liga have established social distancing regulations that must be followed by every member of every team that are partaking in La Liga next week. Barca’s Nelson Semedo, however, broke this protocol and was not involved in Thursday’s training session ahead of their league return match against Mallorca.

The Catalan giants took to twitter to inform fans that the defender was omitted from the training session after pictures revealed the Portuguese international attending a birthday party with 19 other people breaking the rules of social distancing set by La Liga.

Barca have a tough 11-match La Liga campaign ahead of them with Real Madrid lurking just two points behind looking for every opportunity to take over the standings. Quique Setien’s squad is at a further disadvantage as they lack the depth needed to play around the 5 substitution rule added to the remaining matches as they lack the depth to take advantage of this new regulation.

Semedo’s dismissal is concerning as the club are already struggling to find the perfect right-back with Sergi Roberto filling in for the Portuguese international for many matches. Catalan is still under the Phase 2 process of de-escalation happening in Spain that allows the gather of a maximum of 15 people.

Semedo’s party consisted of many more than the allowed number of people, and on top of that none of the attendees were wearing marks or taking account of any social distancing practices. Catalan Radio further reports that the Portuguese star will undergo immediate tests for COVID-19 before being allowed to return to the training session tomorrow. It remains to be seen if he would be available to play against Mallorca as the results of the test will dictate his future.

The former Benfica defender has been heavily linked with a move away from Camp Nou this summer and this latest stunt will surely convince the Barca board to push transfer talks even harder.
