Barcelona are close to securing a much needed defensive upgrade from Ajax.

The Catalan giants have now reportedly shifted their interest to Ajax youngster Sergino Dest as the manager Ronald Koeman has been strictly instructed to follow a sell and buy transfer policy. Barcelona are willing to sell Nelson Semedo, possibly to a Premier League club, in order to land the young American who has had quite a bit of history with the current manager at the Nou Camp, according to Mundo Deportivo.

More from Everything Barca

Sergino Dest is an extremely talented wing-back. Currently 19 years of age, the right-back even filled up Nicolas Tagliafico’s boots at left-back as the Argentine was sidelined due a slight injury. The youngster continued to do so well in that position he kept the position secured until the Argentine returns. Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich have also been very heavily linked to the young American.

Koeman had offered the teenager a deal to play for the Dutch national side during his time there as he was born in a village very close to Amsterdam. However, Dest’s parents are based in the United States of America and the youngster chose to play for the American National Football team instead.

Barcelona president, Josep Maria Bartomeu has strictly informed the club to follow a transfer plan aiming towards replacing existing players for new talents either through sales or exchange deals.  This is because the club are not exactly willing to spend this transfer window due to the ongoing financial crisis at the club. Despite all of that they have signed Miralem Pjanic from Juventus, Portuguese winger Francisco Trincao and 17-year-old Spanish right winger Pedri Lopez, in this transfer window. The Blaugrana are still heavily linked to Lyon’s Memphis Depay and their talks with Georginio Wijnaldum looks to have come to an end as the Dutchman reportedly has asked for a renewal.

As for Dest, the player will only land up at the Nou Camp if the current right-back Semedo is sold according to the club’s current transfer policy. He would do extremely well under the Dutch manager as Ajax and Barca both follow similar institutional methods to play football on the pitch.
