Barca went trophyless in the 2019/20 campaign and newly appointed manager Ronald Koeman has been appointed to rebuild the squad from scratch making major changes. The former Everton manager has already sold the likes of Ivan Rakitic to Sevilla and Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid. He has also sold the first team right-back Nelson Semedo to Wolves.
The former Southampton coach will be looking to bring in Lyon’s Memphis Depay and Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez to replace Suarez. The Dutchman has almost completed the signing of Ajax’s Sergino Dest who reportedly snubbed Hansi Flick’s Bayern Munich and reached an agreement on personal terms with the Catalans in the last moment.
However, the Los Blancos boss believes that the Catalan side will challenge very hard for the title given their disastrous previous season. The La Liga giants still have world-class players like Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Miralem Pjanic, Ansu Fati, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The former Netherlands boss also has Philippe Coutinho under his belt who returned from a season-long loan from the Allianz Arena and he has also vowed to bring former Bundesliga winger Ousmane Dembele back to his very best. Coutinho has already found a regular spot in the starting eleven under Koeman with Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Busquets playing as double pivot behind him.
With the first El Clasico of the season to be played on 25 October, both squads will have a month’s time to settle down and find their footing. Unfortunately for Barca, Messi could potentially be missing the match due to his commitments with the Argentine national team.
