Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman looks to keep Lionel Messi beyond 2021.

It has been over two months now and people are still discussing the massive controversy between the Barcelona board and Lionel Messi. After the failed transfer move, Messi has been very vocal about his disappointment in the way the Barca hierarchy is leading the club to. This has led to a divide in fans, one side who believes that Lionel Messi is right and the club is being disrespectful towards their legends, and one side who believes that Messi is trying to exercise his authority over the club.

More from Everything Barca

AC Milan legend, Clarence Seedorf, believes that the Argentine has every right to express his feelings towards the club. The 33-year-old has given his whole professional career to Barcelona and has won them numerous trophies and records. Then to be disrespected in the manner that he was, any human would naturally be very upset. Messi has stated that for years there has been no concrete road map as to what the new era of Barca will be like instead, they have just thrown in a pile of money in the hopes of everything clicking together.

After spending over a billion euros since the 2014-15 season, last season the club hit rock bottom. It was the first season in over a decade in which the Spanish Giants went trophy-less and after their absolutely humiliating exit in the UEFA Champions League season, Messi had had enough and wanted a move away from the club. The little magician had a contract clause which allowed him to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season if he chose to activate it however when he tried to do so, club President, Josep Bartomeu, claimed that the clause had expired as the new season had already been started although the previous season was stretched due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Messi was in his right to take the club into a legal battle but chose against doing so as he loves the club and decided to rather take the high road and honour his contract.
