Barcelona boss remains adamant about signing Memphis Depay
Ronald Koeman remains keen on securing Memphis Depay for Barcelona.
2020’s summer transfer window was not at all exciting for Barcelona fans as they mostly sold all their players and failed to secure any reinforcements in return. Memphis Depay was one of the top targets for new manager Ronald Koeman and while a personal term was reached, the club could not pay his transfer fee to complete the deal.

The Dutch manager has had nothing but high praise for Depay and even the forward has been pushing for a move. Lyon even decreased his selling price to 25 million euros but even that could not help land him. Due to extremely tight financial conditions, the Spanish giants were only able to sign Ajax’s Sergino Dest after selling Nelson Semedo to Nuno’s Wolverhampton Wanderers in the premier league
The Blaugrana also sold Ivan Rakitic to his former club Sevilla, Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid, and, Arturo Vidal to Inter Milan. This allowed the Catalans to free up a ton of wages and just managed to avoid breaking UEFA’S Financial Fair Play rules for this season. While Suarez was sold on a free transfer, he was one of their highest-paid players on the wage system and a ton of wages were freed up upon his departure.
While the Barca board has been keen on securing Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez as a replacement, Koeman still intends to bring in Memphis Depay in the January transfer window. According to Goal, even the Lyon forward is pushing for a move. Lyon’s president Jean Michael Aulas stated that Depay was extremely disappointed as the Blaugrana failed to land him even for a cheap price this summer.
The La Liga giants have started the new season comfortably under Koeman and the addition of the former Manchester United player in January will be a huge boost. It remains to be seen if, after Depay’s arrival, Barca continues to push for Lautaro.
