Barcelona are planning a special transfer operation for signing defenders

Barcelona failed to sign Eric Garcia from Manchester City, even on deadline day. A new centre back is still a need at the Nou Camp and the club is willing to let go of struggling star, Samuel Umtiti. Garcia can possibly join the Blaugrana in the winter transfer window this season or the following season when his contract with Manchester City comes to an end.

More from Everything Barca

Barca have been rebuilding their squad under new manager Ronald Koeman and it has been going well so far. The transfer window was a little bittersweet for the fans as they signed Ajax’s Sergino Dest and Juventus’ Miralem Pjanic.

They sold many players like Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid, Ivan Rakitic to Sevilla, Nelson Semedo to Nuno’s Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Arthur Melo to Juventus. The La Liga giants, however, failed to land a centre back. Gerard Pique is aging and without Clement Lenglet, Barca centre backs are pretty average.

There was long speculation about Eric Garcia moving back to the Nou Camp from City but it does not seem like that move will be happening anytime soon. The Premier League side wanted at least 20 million euros for the centre-back but the Blaugrana could not fund the move.

They also failed to fund the move for Lyon’s Memphis Depay who was heavily disheartened by the fact that the Catalans failed to land him. Koeman is a huge admirer of the forward and it looks like the former Manchester United man will be pushing for a move in January.

After a ton of financial problems at the Nou Camp, it looks like the Catalans have just about equaled the books in order to make sure that the club does not violate UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules. The La Liga giants can now comfortably move towards a centre back in January or even the following window, as Araujo looks to be a prospect who might just function under the new Dutch manager.
