Lionel Messi close to breaking another phenomenal record.

Lionel Messi is closer than ever to breaking Pele’s one club goal record. Last night in the match against Valencia, Messi scored a rare header to equal Pele’s record and is now just one goal shy of breaking it altogether. This will be another milestone in the Argentine’s incredible and frankly insane career, and although there is a lot of speculation and controversy surrounding the player at the moment, it’s good to see the legend just playing his game and scoring goals.

More from Everything Barca

33-year-old Messi, who is now captain of Barcelona, started his career at the Catalan side when he was merely 13 years of age. He left Newell’s Old Boys to join the legendary side and from then on has gone on to break multiple records and win numerous individual awards. His six Ballon d’Or awards is still the most won by any player although rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, is hot in pursuit with five awards to his name.

It has been a rather difficult start to the season for the Argentine. His name was all over the media due to his desire to leave his boyhood club at the end of last season and speculations have continued ever since. He has also not been performing like his usual self, this could be partly due to the new coach and the new philosophies and partly due to all the media pressure.

Thus, equalling the record of a “footballing god”, will be the boost he requires. Although it was a disappointing game for Barcelona as they only came out from it with one point, Messi was able to equal the record of 643 goals. The Catalans had a rather difficult first half but improved in the second. They were the favorites to win but somehow again managed to let their opponents get back into the game and manage a draw, with a poor defense that has been their problem all season long.

Messi has now proven that he is one of the, if not the greatest, players in the modern generation of football. After he breaks the record, he will cement his legacy in world football, and even if he chooses to leave the club at the end of the season, his presence will always be felt around the Camp Nou and he will return someday as he loves the club and hopefully will not be able to stay away from it for too long.
