Barcelona presidential candidate, Joan Laporta, bashes VAR.

Things at Barcelona are really heating up as Presidential candidates make speeches and give interviews to bring voters on their side. Some have gone on the route of promising better players, some have decided to focus on Lionel Messi’s contract but one of the favourites, Joan Laporta has decided to bash their arch-rivals to gain some favour.

More from Everything Barca

Joan Laporta is one of the two favourites to win the upcoming election on 24th of January. While he has made promises about changing the system and fixing the overwhelming debt, he has also thrown a few jabs at Real Madrid in order to gain more support. Laporta had previously presided over the Catalan side from 2003 to 2010 and thus knows how to run the club and even bring them out of their tough situation.

He has been very vocal about bringing in a different coach and changing the current structure but his shots at Real Madrid caught the attention of the media. In an interview with Marca, the former president of Barcelona claims that their arch-rivals are given special treatment by the officials and it is clear as day. He claims that this is the reason as to why the Madrid side is eight points clear of Barcelona. He said in the interview,

"“If a Martian came down to earth and saw the VAR, they would quickly say that it is in favour of Madrid”Source Goal"

This is not the only attack that he has inflicted on Madrid however, as in December he put up a poster announcing his presidential campaign, very close to the Santiago Bernabeu. This banter is all well and good but Laporta says he does have some genuine plans for the club and people he would like to bring in.

"“I have my own sporting project. I have three names for the technical secretary. I will not fall into the trap of naming names.”"

He said that he would not be naming anyone and would not be talking about specific coaches or players. This is because if he links Barcelona with any player, his price would go up plus the Barcelona player in that position would suffer from lack of confidence. Laporta has previously helped out the club in a similar situation however, he himself had a lot of controversy during the end of his reign.

Currently, Laporta and Victor Font are the favourites to win the elections, we must wait and see who will emerge victorious and what will be in store for the club under his reign.
