Rumors of a possible move to Getafe surfaced over the last couple of days with the club president stating that he, alongside Villarreal’s Kubo, was one of the players they were looking to bring during the window.
The move makes sense for Alena who has seen little to no playing time this season under Ronald Koeman.
The Dutch manager has opted to play with only two midfielders and has preferred the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Miralem Pjanic, and Sergio Busquets.
When Koeman first took over, he advised a number of young players to look for a move as they were not going to see many minutes. Alena was one of those players.
But he opted to stay to try to convince Koeman. For Alena, it hasn’t worked out that way. He knows he can’t afford to just sit on the bench and stunt his development.
Should Getafe and Barca reach a loan deal, it will be the second consecutive season in which the La Masia graduate has to look outside Camp Nou in order to get playing time. Last season, he finished the second half the season with Real Betis.
At Getafe, he would be reunited with former academy teammate, Marc Cucurella. The side managed by José Bordalás currently sit 16th in the La Liga.
