Barcelona are going through a rather difficult time financially. They are over 500 million euros in debt and they need to seriously change things around to avoid going bankrupt.

The interim board has already decided to propose a pay cut for every member, playing and non-playing and the new president will enforce that proposal. Many of the players have already renewed or mended their existing contracts to cater to the financial needs of the club.
However, making pay cuts is not the only way they can raise more funds. Another very effective way to raise money is by selling all the surplus players. Barca are no strangers to this method as they have already axed many veterans who had no part to plan in newly appointed Ronald Koeman’s plans.
Luis Suarez, Arturo Vidal, Ivan Rakitic, Nelson Semedo, Rafinha, and Arda Turan were all sold almost for free. The idea behind these transfers were not to gain funds but to relieve the club of their expensive individual wage bills. While this greatly improved the situation, Barca could sell many of the existing players to raise funds for better reinforcements.
