Aside from missing a game or two, the Frenchman has been healthy for the most part and is proving to be the player the Catalans signed from Borussia Dortmund. But a decision must be made soon both by him and Barca.
According to Sport, his contract is up in 2022 which leaves Barça with only two options. Either they come to an agreement on a contract extension or Barcelona sell him in the summer.
The last thing the club want is for the player to run down his contract and then lose him on a free transfer.
Under manager Ronald Koeman, Dembele seems to have found someone who could get the best out of him. His explosiveness down either wing have been vital and added a dimension that they outside of Ansu Fati.
The biggest reason why he’s having his best season since arriving is that he’s managed to stay fit. The talent was always there but he couldn’t show it because his injuries would keep him out for a large, or all, chunk of the season.
He was even being linked to Manchester United at the start of the season. He ended up staying because United were only willing to accept a loan. Given Barcelona’s financial situation, they wanted to sell.
From all accounts, Dembélé is happy at the club. He’s rejected other proposals because he was determined to overcome his injuries and succeed with Barca.
Any talks about a new deal will have to wait until a new president is elected. It won’t be until then, where we will find out if he’s happy enough to sign an extension.
