Ousmane Dembele is once again in the transfer news as he will be entering the last year of his contract with Barcelona, next season. The French midfielder has had a rather troubled time with the club but under Ronald Koeman he has managed to improve and now wishes to stay on at the club. However, the club needs to make money as well to pay off their debts and they cannot afford to offer Ousmane Dembele another lucrative contract.

Barcelona tried to sell off the 23-year-old winger this season, as Koeman did not think he would be using him too much. He would also fetch the club quite a sizable amount as Manchester United were rumored to have offered a figure close to 90 million euros.
However, the deal could not go through as Ousmane Dembele would not sign off the deal. The winger wanted to remain at the Camp Nou and fight for his place even after being told by his manager that he was not a part of the manager’s plans.
The player’s gamble paid off in the end as he already has six goals to his name and three assists as well. He has become a starter under Koeman although he was on the sidelines at the beginning of the season. However, there is a massive situation surrounding his contract now. Dembele has made it clear that he wishes to continue at the club and Koeman would also like to keep him but the club’s financial situation might not allow them to do so.
The French player’s contract runs out in 2022 and he will be expecting the new president to sort out his contract. The club cannot afford to pay lucrative wages to the player any more and they do not want to lose him on a free transfer. With Manchester United, Juventus, and Chelsea monitoring the player, the Catalans cannot let these clubs acquire him for free. This is a very complicated situation for the club and they should start negotiating with the player soon after the new president is elected.
Should Barca sell or renew Dembele?
