Last year in the summer transfer window, Barcelona were without a proper number nine and were looking at their options. Due to the financial crisis, they did not have much of a budget but still tried to go for one of the most in-form strikers of the previous season, Lautaro Martinez.

The transfer failed eventually due to the lack of funds however, Ronald Koeman still believed that they could still persuade him in the next season. Martinez put an end to all that with recent comments.

The 23-year-old striker was in great form having scored 21 goals and given eight assists last season and Barcelona were trying to capitalize on the player as even Lionel Messi wanted him at the club.

The Argentine striker himself wanted to join the club and unite with his compatriot but the deal could not go through because of the lack of money. Martinez was forced to stay back at Inter Milan but his form has only improved this season.

The player has only gone on to improve his form and it seems like he will be a sensational striker when he enters his prime. Thus it is a huge blow for the Catalans that he just cemented his career with Inter. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, the Argentine confirmed that he is loyal to the Italian side and his relationship with Barcelona is history. He said,

Thus it seems like bringing Martinez to Barcelona will forever remain a dream and Koeman will have to look into other alternatives for next season. One player that the Dutch manager has eyes on is Lyon’s Memphis Depay.

The Winger can also play in a number nine position and he will become a free agent at the end of the season. Thus it will be a much more pocket-friendly option for the Catalans plus Koeman has already worked with the player in the national team before and will know what to expect from him.
