Lionel Messi has been awarded February’s La Liga Player of the Month award after an absolutely brilliant month which helped his team back into the title race.

Although the Barcelona legend has been tipped to leave the Catalans at the end of the season, he is still giving his very best for the club. His efforts have clinched him yet another individual accolade, this time a player of the month award.

The 32-year-old year scored seven goals in five matches to win the award over the likes of Thibaut Courtois and Alexander Isak who gave him tough competition.

However, the two braces against Deportivo Alaves and Elche helped him clinch the award. The player has also helped his team scrap their way back into a title race and Barcelona currently sit in the second position, five points below Atletico Madrid.

The Argentine had made it clear when he won the top goalscorer award that individual awards do not mean much to him and he would rather have the whole team win a trophy. That is why he tried to leave back in August as he felt like the team was not capable of challenging for trophies anymore.

Ronald Koeman had a rocky start with the Catalans but the team have pulled their socks up and are now undefeated in 13 league matches. The last 13 games of the season are absolutely crucial and they still have a tie left against the leaders.

They must make sure that they do not let go of their momentum now as they can still secure the title if the leaders slip up. Atletico have two tough games left one against Barcelona and one against Real Madrid so the league is not over yet and winning the La Liga could help Koeman convince Messi to stay back at the club.
