The 18-year-old superstar from UD Las Palmas, joined the Catalans for just a bit over 10 million euros last season, although that price is subject to change. He was scouted by the Blaugrana as one of their future stars but no one could have predicted the season he would go on to have.
Ronald Koeman started giving a few minutes to the player every now and then however, the Spaniard was hungry for more. His performance compelled the Dutch manager to give him a few starts and now he has become one of the constant starters from Barcelona. His impact on the game is very evident and even though he is not directly involved in a lot of goals, his passes and playmaking before the goal is undeniably important.
Pedri gives his opinion on the current Barcelona season and his relation with Messi.
In a recent interview with the Club del Deportista, the player revealed to the public his emotions and feelings on his fantastic season. At the age of only 18, he has made over 40 appearances for the great club and that is an accomplishment in itself. He told the reporter,
"“The truth is that I did not expect it at all. I was lucky enough that las Palmas coach, Pepe Mel, was giving me minutes, but I come to a team as big as FC Barcelona and, well, I was thinking about doing the preseason, and seeing if I could stay and keep working so I could have as many minutes as possible. But what I’m living is a surprise for me as well.”Source MundoDeportivo"
He went on to talk about his relationship with the world’s best player, Messi, saying that it was like a dream playing beside him for the first time. Playing with the greatest of all time is very easy according to Pedri as a simple pass to the Argentine can turn into a deadly attack all of a sudden. He said in the interview,
"“When I was next to him I was very shocked to see him. To watch it on TV or in a video game… I hardly believed it. Playing with Messi is easy because when you give it to him you know things are going to happen. ”“I hope I can be close to him for several years. It would be great if I could enjoy Messi and learn a lot of things by his side.”Source MundoDeportivo"
Barcelona fans will certainly be hoping that the pair can remain together for a few seasons at least. While the youngsters do seem promising and players like Ansu Fati, Pedri, and Riqui Puig can fill in the gap after Messi’s departure, they are not experienced enough at the moment. They need a mentor like the Argentine who will guide them to success and thus keeping the captain is critical for the new president.
Do you think Pedri will be the next big thing for Barcelona?
