The 33-year-old wanted to leave his boyhood club last year as he believed that Barcelona were beyond repair and he wanted to win more trophies. He wanted to join a more competitive team but due to some complication, he chose to stay back at Camp Nou and honor his last season with the team.
Now he has around three months left in his contract and he will be free to leave next season for free. It will be a huge loss for the Blaugrana should he choose to leave but after the arrival of Joan Laporta, many, including Rivaldo, believe that he might extend his contract with the club.
Barcelona legend thinks that Lionel Messi will extend his contract with the Catalans.
They have started performing well again and have even managed to haul themselves back into the title race. They have also managed to reach another cup final and they now have two good chances of earning silverware. Rivaldo thinks that the new form along with the new president is enough to make the Captain stay on at the club. He said in an interview with Betfair,
"“Barcelona are massively improving in the last few weeks, capitalising on Lionel Messi’s superb form and the election of a new president. Messi looks much more connected and happier since Juan Laporta’s arrival – a president he knows well,”“For that reason, I’m starting to believe more and more that Messi might reach an agreement with the new board and sign a new contract to stay at the club for a few more years.”Source Goal"
It does seem like he might actually extend his time with the club however, clubs like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are very confident that they will be able to steal the six-time Ballon d’Or winner. At the end of the day, it is his decision and we must respect whatever he chooses to do, whether it is staying with Barcelona or joining the MLS, he has earned the right to do as he pleases without being ostracized by the footballing world.
Do you think Lionel Messi can be convinced to stay on at the club?
