Barcelona have been performing quite well in recent months however, they still have one big problem that they must solve, that is Lionel Messi. The Argentine skipper is still running out of a contract and no offers have been made to him by the Catalans as of yet. However, that could soon change as reports suggest that Joan Laporta might make a contract offer to the player in the upcoming weeks.

More from Everything Barca

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the new president of FC Barcelona, Laporta, had been making statistical analyses of the club’s financial situation in order to understand how much the club can actually afford to pay Lionel Messi.

The 33-year-old currently boasts the biggest contract in sporting history however, he should expect a heavy reduction to that in his new contract offer. With the 1.2 billion euros debt, the Catalans cannot sustain his old fee and Laporta understands that quite well.

There is still hope that the magician will stay on at the club as Ronald Koeman has finally managed to get a hold of the team and they have been synchronizing perfectly these days. Their 6-1 demolition of Real Sociedad reminded everyone of prime Barca and Messi can be convinced to stay if the team keeps on performing in a similar manner.

Barcelona risk losing Lionel Messi to other European giants

On the topic of other clubs trying to acquire Messi, Manchester City had previously been the favorites however, they recently announced that they have had no talks with the player and all the links were just rumors. Paris Saint-Germain on the other hand have shown their eagerness to sign the player and MLS side, Inter Miami will also try their luck.

The player’s contract will run out on the 30th of June and Laporta must convince the mercurial superstar to stay with them before that. After that, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner becomes a free agent, free to explore other teams and other leagues.
