Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been considered the two best players in the world for over a decade now. They completely dominated the Ballon d’Ors in the previous decade and only Luka Modric could dethrone them for one season in 2018. Thus when Kylian Mbappe says that he is the best player in the world, it seems a bit of hyperbole however, he could definitely go on to be the best later on and could even break Messi and Ronaldo’s many records.

More from Everything Barca

The 22-year-old French international recently revealed in an interview with RMC Sport that he hypes himself up before every game by telling himself that he is the best in the world and that he is better than Lionel Messi and Ronaldo. It is this ego that helped him achieve what he has to this day. He said in the interview,

"“The ego? Of course, it’s important because when you’re in the rough, no one else is going to push you and you have to convince yourself that you are capable of toppling mountains.”“Every time I go on a pitch I always tell myself that I’m the best and yet I have played on grounds where there was Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. They are better players than me, they have done a billion more things than me. But, in my head, I always tell myself that I’m the best because that way you don’t give yourself limits and you try to give your best.”Source Goal"

The attitude that Mbappe carries, the belief that he is the best in the world is probably what sets him apart from the rest of the players in the world at the moment. He has already won many trophies in his six years of professional football, including four Ligue 1 titles and six other domestic titles.

Kylian Mbappe has one trophy that evaded both Lionel Messi and C. Ronaldo

The player has also won the prestigious FIFA World Cup trophy which has escaped the hands of both Messi and Ronaldo and in that sense, Mbappe already has one up on the two best players in the world. However, to assert the same dominance that Messi and Ronaldo has over the footballing world, Mbappe has to win titles and score goals every season.

The player is still very young and has a lot of positives ahead of him but he should not drown himself into trying to be the best. Football is a team game at the end of the day and even the best player won’t win titles if he does not have a good team and a positive mentality. The hunger to be the best gave Ronaldo five Ballon d’Ors but at the same time, it did not help Neymar achieve the same.

Mbappe can become the best but to be remembered, he will need to get a hold of European football and win the UEFA Champions League multiple times just like Messi and Ronaldo. He needs to lead the team if he wants to win five to six Ballon d’Ors and be written next to the greats of the footballing world like the Argentine and Portuguese.
