Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman’s renowned love for Georginio Wijnaldum isn’t fading. The Dutch manager remains hopeful of bringing his compatriot to Camp Nou on a free transfer from Liverpool after the end of this season.

Koeman assumed charge of a disjointed Barca side in the summer of 2020, in need of a major rebuild. Barcelona’s hands were tied due to the crumbling finances which restricted them from making any big summer signing.

More from Everything Barca

Sergino Dest was the only player signed by Koeman. The former Netherlands boss wanted to take advantage of Wijnaldum’s contract situation at Liverpool and sign him on a cheap deal but the failure to meet Liverpool’s asking price meant that Koeman wouldn’t have his man.

The interest keeps on growing, even more so, because now the 30-year-old is a free agent at the end of the season. The financial condition of the club has slumped and newly appointed President Joan Laporta is doing everything in his power to make Barcelona economically sustainable again.

Bosman transfers will be the smartest and best way to strengthen the side and not burden the club transfer chests. Eric Garcia is touted to join the Blaugrana on a free transfer meanwhile Memphis Depay and Wijanldum also remain strong possibilities. Koeman has been the biggest backer in the Barca camp to sign Depay and Wijnaldum.

There is nothing signed yet between Georginio Wijnaldum and Barcelona

The Catalans have surely initiated contact and held talks with the Liverpool midfielder. Wijnaldum is yet to commit a new deal with Liverpool as he awaits an official offer from Barcelona. According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca surely are in conversation with Wijnaldum but nothing has been signed on paper yet.

Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp are still hopeful of retaining the services of the midfielder. The Reds’ last offer was a three-year extension with the same salary. Should Wijanldum eventually join Barca, the club will have another competent player in an already well-stacked midfield. Miralem Pjanic has failed to win Koeman’s trust and could be sold to generate funds.

As per another report, Wijnaldum is demanding an annual salary of 8 million euros and a contract length of three years. The Blaugrana have made mistakes in the past of keeping ageing players on bumper contracts and avoiding another such scenario is a must for better functioning of the club.

Instead, placing trust in the youth and La Masia could be highly beneficial in the longer run. Ilaix Moriba is turning heads in his breakthrough season. The La Masia product ticks all the boxes required. Moriba is younger than Wijnaldum, 12 years younger to be precise, and understands the Barcelona style.
