Signing a striker remains the top priority for Barcelona.

Ever since Sergio Aguero announced he was leaving Manchester City at the end of the season, speculation put his next destination at Barcelona.

After all, the Catalan side are in desperate need of a striker and his signing could ultimately sway Lionel Messi into signing a new contract.

However, because of his age, 32, his signing would have represented a short-term fix as Barcelona’s real interest lies with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

But, according to Sport, after spending the last couple of days analyzing a possible move, the club are said to be seriously entering the race for Aguero. They are aware of his interest to play for Barcelona and alongside Messi.

The operation is set to be underway but it will be up to the player to decide if he is going to accept any potential offer.

Barcelona’s interest also stems from the fact that he is going to be a free agent at the end of the season. That being said, they are not going to go overboard with his wages.

One reason is that they can’t afford to and it goes counter to their goal of trimming down the wage bill. The other is Aguero’s inability to stay fit the last few seasons. He’s been sidelined the majority of this season with injuries.

His potential arrival will not be a hindrance should the club want to go out and sign another striker. Again, Aguero may simply be a stopgap for next season until they can go and sign someone like Haaland.

The Catalan side is not the only club to be interested in the Argentinian striker. Juventus is another possible destination. If this turns into a bidding war with regards to wages, then the Italian side may pull ahead given the different tax structures in Italy compared to Spain.

The final decision will ultimately rest with Aguero. But as of now, Barca feel they are in a good position to sign him.
