Barcelona are reportedly in talks with Ousmane Dembele about a contract extension with the club. However, according to Diario Sport, talks with the player are not progressing well as the two parties are struggling to reach an agreement.

More from Everything Barca

Ousmane Dembele arrived at Barcelona during the 17/18 season. He was signed by the club for an immense amount of money. An estimated figure of around 103-110 million euros. Given the price tag and his brilliant performances at Borussia Dortmund, the fans expected a proper replacement for Neymar Jr who had then departed for Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Dortmund star has largely failed to deliver in a Barca shirt with injuries being a massive problem for the young winger, which led him to miss a massive portion of his days at the Nou Camp. Whenever he did get a chance to play, he did not perform as expected, for instance missing a 5-yard tap in against Liverpool at the Nou Camp in 2018/19.

Ousmane Dembele has potentially rejuvenated his Barcelona career

The Frenchman has a contract with the Blaugranas till the year 2022 which has resulted in many debating whether Barca should keep or sell the youngster. However, the Spanish giants want him secured and at the club for the long term, after his recent performances under coach Ronald Koeman. These reports, however, suggest that a deal with the winger is not progressing and is not going anywhere positive. Hence, the club have decided to wait till the end of the season and start fresh talks with the player.

The winger may not have had the most successful career over at the Nou Camp but he has improved heavily and stayed way more consistent than any season before, under Ronald Koeman. It was the coach’s priority to focus on the development of Dembele and he has kept his word. The player looks like he is ready to show the world why the Spanish giants bought him in the first place. It’s not surprising that the Catalans want to tie him down for a long time especially after this season, which has attracted many European giants like Manchester United and Liverpool.
