After a season of despondency, Barça’s first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be taking some time off to go under the knife for treating his right knee. It means the German will miss out on Barcelona’s last game of the season against Eibar and also Germany’s campaign of Euro 2020 this summer.
Evidently, ter Stegen wasn’t Joachim Löw’s first-choice goalkeeper to start for Germany. That position had already been appointed to FC Bayern Munich‘s Manuel Neuer. So the 29-year-old Barca keeper saw this period as an opportunity to get his knee operated on so he has enough time to rehab it to its full fitness before the next regular season.
"“I’m disappointed about yesterday’s defeat and that now we can no longer win La Liga. After a complicated start to the season, we showed good character going 19 matches unbeaten – but we weren’t able to keep this form.I have decided together with the medical team of the club that I will do a complementary intervention on my knee. I’m sad that I will miss the EURO 2020 this summer with Germany. For the first time in many years I will be a fan at home supporting my country, I hope we win it!After the summer break, when we are back on the pitch I hope to be able to play with fans once again, I miss it!Thank you for your support throughout a difficult season and stay healthy!” – Marc-André ter Stegen via his Instagram."
While Blaugrana’s title hopes had ended after a defeat to Celta Vigo, an immaterial fixture remains to conclude the season. Brazilian goalkeeper Neto will possibly take his place to guard Barcelona’s goalposts in their closing game. As for ter Stegen, his surgery is set to occur on Thursday, May 20, in Malmo. As informed by Marca, Dr. Hakan Alfredson will operate under the supervision and assistance of Los Cules’ medical team.
