Despite having very limited financial flexibility, Barcelona continue to be linked with players that are almost impossible for Joan Laporta and his board to conceivably sign.

The latest rumor comes from Italy and it involves a player the club was linked to only a couple of seasons ago.

More from Everything Barca

The former Ajax center back was a Barcelona target a few seasons ago.

According to ‘Onze’ de Esport 3, Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt is not comfortable with the Italian giants and may be contemplating a change of scenery come next season.

The Nou Camp would be an ideal destination for him as the report also claims that he and his entourage believe they made a mistake in not choosing the Catalan side back in 2019.

The club did everything they could to convince De Ligt to come to Barcelona when he was still an Ajax player but simply couldn’t compete with what Juventus were offering.

Juventus signed De Ligt to a five-year deal and paid Ajax €75 million.

Barca remain interested in the Dutch center back and will be monitoring his situation as it develops.

Should they consider him a priority, it is likely that they would want to come to an agreement that includes a player swap. Both sides have done deals similar to that in the past. The most recent one is the swap of Miralem Pjanic for Arthur Melo.

With Eric Garcia, another center back, arriving soon, the club are going to need to sell some of their defenders to make room for De Ligt. In any respect, it is also likely they are planning to do that even if they don’t go in for the defender.

Going into another transfer window with the pandemic still in the background, high-figure deals are unlikely. A move for De Ligt falls in that category.

However, stranger things have happened and what Barca do have in their favor is the relationship between president Joan Laporta and De Ligt’s agent, Mino Raiola.
