Georginio Wijnaldum could also be announced as a new signing soon. Fabrizio Romano already confirmed that Wijnaldum will sign a contract with the Catalans until 2024. The 30 year old could’ve been announced before the UEFA Euro 2020 but it appears that the Netherlands manager Frank de Boer will not allow any of his players to leave for medicals before the end of the tournament.
Coming back to Depay, the Dutchman has been linked to the Blaugrana since last season when Koeman arrived at the helm. Koeman also tried to bring him in the winter transfer window but Barca’s crumbling financial structure prevented any such deal from taking place. Earlier, it was also reported that the Barca board were a bit sceptical about Depay’s signing but Koeman was always confident that he wanted to bring the 27-year-old to Camp Nou.
Memphis Depay should arrive at Barcelona after Koeman’s continuity is confirmed
After the season ended, Koeman’s future came into question as Barcelona failed to win the La Liga despite having chances to get ahead of Atletico Madrid. Several reports emerged about Joan Laporta considering Koeman replacements but it now appears that Barca are set to continue with Koeman as head coach.
As per the report, the Catalans are set to announce Koeman’s continuity soon. The former Everton manager will agree to convert a part of his fixed salary into variables depending on the team’s performances and results on the pitch. If Koeman does help Barca reach certain objectives for 2021-22 season, there will also be a clause to extend his contract for one more season.
Now that Koeman’s continuity is almost assured, he is likely to get his wish of signing Depay and Wijnaldum. There was never a doubt regarding Wijnaldum’s arrival once it was reported by multiple reliable sources but Depay’s future still remained up in the air.
With Koeman staying, Depay talks will likely pick up pace and Barca could get another potent attacker on a free transfer. Talks have been ongoing and should pick up pace now as his signing was just one step away, as per Football Espana.
