For the first time in his career, Lionel Messi no longer has a contract with Barcelona and is currently a free agent. While it is not known where the player will end up next season, he is officially no longer with the Catalan side. This means that although the president, Joan Laporta is trying his best to fix a contract with the 34-year-old, other clubs can also send their offers to the player. Paris Saint-Germain had made it clear that they wanted to sign the mercurial superstar from last season, and according to new reports, they have already made their first move in order to secure his signature.

More from Everything Barca

Messi wanted to leave Barcelona at the beginning of last season, this is not a secret to anyone now. However, by the end of the season, he was inspired by Ronald Koeman‘s faith in the youngsters and the meteoric rise of players such as Pedri, Ronald Araujo, and Oscar Mingueza. This along with the fact that they were able to win a trophy, was enough for Messi to realize that the next generation of Barca would be a formidable one. Thus, he wanted to renew his contract and according to reports, a two-year contract has already been negotiated by the club.

We have learnt that although the Argentine wants to sign the offer and cement his career with the Catalans, he cannot do so unless the club increases its wage budget. As of now, La Liga’s governing body has placed a cap on Barca’s salary amount and if the Catalans are not able to get more funds via sponsorships or player transfers, Messi will not be able to join his childhood team. Among this confusion and chaos, PSG has recognized that this is the perfect moment for them to strike.

The Spanish news outlet, Diario AS, has reported that PSG has taken their chance and sent an official contract offer to Messi. While this may be true, it is unlikely that the Catalan-raised superstar will respond right now. The Argentine is on the form of his life and he has carried this form in Copa America, where he has led his team to the semi-finals of the tournament. Messi is completely focused on winning the Copa this year as it may be his final involvement in the tournament.

As for whether he will be joining PSG, it is unlikely as he had already stated that he does not want to leave Barcelona for the money. Lionel Messi is clearly impressed by the youth development and the plans of the new president. Along with that, the Catalans have also brought in Sergio Aguero, Messi’s very close friend, who will definitely persuade the Argentine into signing the contract as soon as Barca fixes their finances.
