Pedri: The Future of FC Barcelona in Turbulent Times
By Ali Iqbal
FC Barcelona is in one of its most pivotal, yet frustrating and turbulent periods in recent history. This is because the front office of Barca now has to decide what direction the team must go in, while offloading some of the big contracts that have weakened the team financially. Some of the fringe players that Barca have to decide on, include Samuel Umtiti, Ousmane Dembele (a player with a lot of promise but who may not be living up to his extremely high transfer fee), Antoine Griezmann, and even Riqui Puig who is struggling to convince coach Ronald Koeman.

However, for a Barca team that is in need of a great shakeup, there is a diamond in the rough. That is of course Pedri, the teenage sensation who has lit up both La Liga and the 2020 Euros as of late.
Pedri really made a name for himself in the 2020-21 La Liga season, where he shined in the Barca midfield, a section of the field graced with legends such Andreas Iniesta, Xavi, and Neymar Jr., just to name a few. Pedri shined by showing exquisite passing and creativity, while exhibiting strong positional acumen, and serving as a strong partner to Messi in the midfield. Pedri is quickly shifting from a hidden gem to one of the best young talents in world football.
Pedri has shined both at Barcelona and during the Euros, and has become one of the best young players in football.
Pedri’s strongest feature perhaps, is his composure, which has been ever so highlighted during the 2020 Euros. With fans back in attendance and a global audience in hand, Pedri was a shining light for Spain, guiding the midfield and serving as the creative spark for a Spain team that lacked a prolific striker or central attacking midfielder to create. Pedri’s 92% pass accuracy during the tournament was a big factor for Spain’s stable and controlled play.
Pedri gained a lot of attention during Euro 2020, however, he remained unphased and performed despite increased pressure being placed on the youngster. Composure and performance under increased standards are intangibles that star players show, and Pedri has by far exhibited these features both domestically and on the global stage.
This leads to the inevitable conclusion, that Pedri is one of the most untouchable assets for Barca and has the potential to be a club icon for years to come. For a Barca team that is looking to regain its identity and solidify their position as the top club in the world, it is clear that Pedri should be one of the focal points that can bring this club back on top.
