Barcelona’s Gerard Pique out at least two weeks with calf injury
The Barcelona center-back was taken off in the first half of the Athletic Bilbao match
Barcelona center-back Gerard Piqué is set to miss at least two weeks after picking up a calf muscle injury in the team’s 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao over the weekend.
According to Diario AS, the specific diagnosis was a “small elongation of the muscle” in his right calf. If all goes well, Piqué should only miss the next match at home against Getafe. With the international break coming up, he should be back in time for a crucial match away against Sevilla.

Fortunately for the player and the club, the injury is not the same one he had been struggling with during the week leading up to the Athletic Bilbao game. That discomfort was in his right calf.
However, it does call into question whether it was worth the risk playing the 34-year-old especially with it just being the start of the season.
While the optimistic diagnosis has him out for only two weeks, Piqué reports he could potentially miss up to a month which means he could be out for more than just one match.
How he recovers will ultimately determine how soon he can come back. But as mentioned, playing a half-fit Piqué against a team like Sevilla is a recipe for disaster.
Barcelona will be hoping his timetable is on the optimistic side as they will be without Eric García for the Getafe game after receiving a red card late in their last match. At the Sánchez Pizjuán, they may be without Piqué as the Uruguayan was called up for the World Cup qualifiers with Uruguay.
Despite never being the quickest, Piqué is a veteran and a leader for the Barcelona defense. With a number of young center-backs, it is going to be up to him to lead by example. Especially against tougher opponents. Ronald Koeman needs to be more careful in how he uses him, which means avoiding unnecessary risks like playing him when he is already carrying an injury.
