Barcelona will most probably let go of Memphis Depay next season, since he has not been able to step up as a striker and it was never the role that he truly preferred either. The plan was for Ronald Koeman to utilize Depay as a number nine, like he had done previously in the Dutch national team, however, goals were few and scarce and the new manager, Xavi Hernandez, has realized that he will need a traditional striker. Thus, a new swap deal is in the works between the Catalans and Juventus, for a swap between Depay and Alvaro Morata.

According to Italian journalist Romeo Agresti, a verbal deal has been agreed upon by Barca and Morata, regarding his contract. The pay will obviously be a bit less and the time period is only for 18 months at the moment. However, as more fans are allowed into the stadiums and more avenues for revenue opens up, they can ultimately offer a better contract to the Spanish striker. Morata will be the perfect number nine for Barca as he has the poacher instinct that Depay lacked. His heading is also tremendous which means that Jordi Alba and Dani Alves can both set up a lot of goals for the target man.

Barcelona close to signing Alvaro Morata

Right now, the deal is set-top be completed soon and the striker should end up at Catalunya by the starting of next season however, Juve will try to find a striker before they let go of Morata. While a swap deal could be on, Depay will most likely not be their number nine. Instead, he will play on the wings and Juve will go for another traditional striker who will directly replace Morata. Currently, the team is scouting players such as Mauro Icardi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Edinson Cavani is another option that both Barca and Juve could go for.
