Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, sent a strong message at the end of the year when he said that he was willing to do whatever it takes to strengthen the current squad. The club is going through serious financial problems however, Laporta is ready to make some sacrifices in order to bring in top-quality players. The main positions that the Catalans need to worry about are the number nine position and the centre-back position. Their new number nine, Memphis Depay, has not been able to provide consistent goals and thus the club will be trying for Erling Haaland or Alvaro Morata next season.
In the defense, the Catalans have a lot of centre-backs however, the majority of them are not performing properly. Samuel Umtiti is forever injured, Gerard Pique is too old to play consistently and both Clement Lenglet and Eric Garcia have not been performing well at all. Thus, from this standpoint, it would seem that going for a winger would be a waste. However, for the ones that have been following the transfer window closely, they will know that Ousmane Dembele is on his way out of the club. The French forward was negotiating with a club a few weeks ago however, that broke down when the player asked for more wages.
Barcelona will need to replace Ousmane Dembele
According to Dembele, the club disrespected him by offering him a lower salary while simultaneously trying for Haaland. However, the main reason why the club cannot afford to pay Demebel his old wages is because of the salary cap implemented by La Liga. Due to the cap, Barca has to lower the wages of a lot of their players and even sell a few of them. They cannot simply add players or give them big contracts because if they did, they would not be able to register the players. However, Dembele is not willing to lower his salary and thus Barca will go for a winger to replace him next season. The three options for Barca are:
