Former Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman brought in Luuk de Jong from Sevilla on a loan. The 31-year-old striker was never meant to be the first team striker and Memphis Depay was supposed to be the one scoring the most number of goals for the club. After that topsy-turvy season with the club, Barca have now decided that they will not be looking to keep the player since they already have brought in a new striker in the winter market. According to AS, the player will go back to his parent club and will then be sold onto another club.

De Jong did not have a very good run with the club however, he was very influential and some of Barca’s matches. His beginning to the season was less than satisfactory and many wondered why he was brought in, in the first place. Depay was brought in from Olympique Lyon and was meant to be the main striker and thus De Jong’s transfer did not really make sense. However, the veteran striker did manage to score 2 times in the last 3 appearances, all of them where he was brought on in the dying moments of the game.

Barcelona decide not to sign Luuk de Jong

He might not be the best striker in the world however, he does have an impact and it’s similar to Olivier Giroud. He might have stayed around at the club for longer but with the introduction of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, there is no need for him at the club any longer. Barcelona did not have an option to buy him but they didn’t have the option of first refusal which is basically them matching the bid of any other club that wanted him. They will obviously not use that clause because they are in fact planning to go for Erling Haaland in the summer. We wish De Jong the very best in his career ahead and we thank him for his contribution to Barca.
