Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto looks destined to leave the club this summer. The Spaniard graduated through the ranks of La Masia before making his senior team debut in 2010. In over a decade, Roberto has made 302 appearances for the Blaugranes, registering 11 goals and 30 assists.

With his contract set to expire in 2022, reports indicate that the 30-year-old is all set to leave the club. La Liga competitors Atletico Madrid were touted as a possible destination for the versatile Spaniard. The imminent arrival of Frank Kessie could further push the 30-year-old to the fringes of Xavi’s plans.

However, Sergi Roberto could still have a future at the club. The Catalan giants are still hopeful of opening talks with the midfielder’s representatives. Sport also reports that manager Xavi could have an important role reserved for Roberto. But the possibility of an extension hinges on the club’s finances too.

Here is how FC Barcelona could benefit from the renewal of Sergi Roberto:

#1 Experience and VersatilityAt Barcelona, Sergi Roberto has played as a left-back, right-back, center-back, defensive-midfielder, center-midfielder, attacking midfielder, and wide-forward. This makes the Spaniard an extremely handy utility option. Roberto can fill any role as required in case of injuries or suspensions to other players. The 30-year-old also carries more experience than most of Barca’s youthful side. This means that Roberto does not necessarily have to start week-in and week-out. Instead, he can be a useful squad player, adding some much-needed depth in the midfield and defense.
