Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez is keen on reinforcing his right flank in the summer transfer window, especially after the recent defeat to Real Madrid which confirmed that neither Jules Kounde nor Ronald Araujo are particularly comfortable moving away from their centre-back position.

After the Copa del Rey defeat against Los Blancos, Xavi held a meeting with President Joan Laporta and the sporting decision alongside Mateu Alemany has been made that reinforcement is much-needed and the club is willing to spend their transfer budget to ensure a solution in the summer.

Barcelona find the ideal right-back signing

A defender that has been heavily linked with a move to Camp Nou and is preferred by Xavi is Villarreal right-back Juan Foyth. According to AS, the Spanish side will not let their Argentine international leave easily, especially with a contract running until 2026. Reports suggest that all contacts made with Villarreal have led to the same result, them referring to the release clause which is set at €54 million. That is an amount that cannot be met by the Catalan giants as their financial situation is already making it difficult to register current players like Gavi.

Xavi considers Foyth to have the ideal profile for a right-back that would suit his tactics and is versatile enough to play as a centre-back as well. Having said that, the hefty price tag could just the Catalans to look elsewhere with Manchester United‘s Diogo Dalot, Borussia Dortmund‘s Thomas Meunier and Bayern Munich‘s Benjamin Pavard all being linked.

One thing is for certain, while the need for a new right-back is undisputed, the Blaugranas will need to fix their finances before entering the transfer market.
