Pre-season is important for everyone, but for some, it’s the deciding factor on whether they stay or go. We know that Robert Lewandowski will be leading the line for Barcelona this year, and we know that Gavi will be key in midfield, but I’ve picked out five players who need a good pre-season tour of the USA to cement their place in Xavi’s squad for the upcoming season.

Sergino Dest – RB

Dest returned to Barcelona this summer having experienced a disappointing loan performance with AC Milan where he made just a handful of starts.

Due to the poor performances, the Italian side chose not to activate their option to purchase Dest for €20 million.

The USMNT player is determined to fight his way into the plans of Xavi, despite transfer rumours swirling about Barca’s plan to move him this summer.

He’s in his home country and Xavi will give him every opportunity to impress. Barcelona have spoken about wanting to bring in another RB this year, but if Dest can do enough they can concentrate their resources in central midfield.

The former Ajax man is just 22 years old and there is reason to believe he’s still finding his feet in terms of the player he will eventually become.

Dest is fast and forward-thinking, two traits that Xavi loves in his full-backs. If he can get forward and support Ousmane Dembélé and show that defensively he’s reliable, he has a future at the club.
