After being pictured in Porto last week, it was only a matter of time before Nico Gonzalez’s move to Porto was completed, and according to football insider Fabrizio Romano, the deal is done.

The Barcelona midfielder will move to the Portuguese outfit on a permanent transfer. A great move for Gonzalez who will have the opportunity to play consistently next year, including in the Champions League.

Barcelona will receive €8 million for the transfer straight away, but they have inserted two clauses into the transfer as future protection.

If Porto sells Gonzalez then Barcelona will automatically receive 40% of the transfer fee. It does not specify if it’s 40% of the entire fee or 40% of the profit generated.

With Malcolm’s sell-on fee, it was based on the profit made on his transfer. So If Porto were to sell Gonzalez for €18 million, Barca will either get €7.2 million (based on the whole fee) or €4 million (based on the profit made).

Barca have also inserted a buy-back option on Gonzalez, but it’s unclear what that figure is. Usually, it’s around double the amount the player is sold for, so in this instance, it would be €16 million, although that’s unconfirmed at this time.

Gonzalez will get plenty of opportunities with Porto

Porto is signing Gonzalez because they believe he has the talent to start in their midfield, as they attempt to beat Benfica and other rivals to the title next year.

They also needed to improve their quality in depth considering they’ve qualified for the Champions League.

The 21-year-old midfielder has been with Barcelona since he was 10 years old and spent a successful season on loan at Valencia last year.

The central midfielder helped Los Che avoid relegation last year with a number of battling performances and generated interest from Spain, England and Portugal.

In the end, Porto won the race for his signature and I’m sure he’ll be a fine signing for them.
