Could FC Barcelona defender be on his way to Girona?
Right now we’re focused on the knowns. Joao Cancelo arriving at Barcelona and Clement Lenglet is on his way out. But could there be a surprise on the cards? Eric Garcia is being linked with a move to Girona with the central defender interested in playing under manager Michel.
Earlier in the summer it was believed that Garcia could be on his way out, but those rumours disappeared the closer we got to the season.
It wouldn’t be the first bit of business between the two sides this summer. Barcelona signed Oriol Romeu from the Blanquivermells before sending Pablo Torre back to the Estadi Montilivi.
Now a report in Mundo Deportivo indicates that Garcia would be open to a move with Girona looking at him as both a central defender and central defensive midfielder.
Does Eric Garcia have a future at Barcelona?
Garcia is contracted to Barcelona until 2026 but seems to have tumbled down the pecking order for Xavi.
With Jules Kounde moving to right-back to cover for the injured Ronald Araujo, Xavi elected to play central midfielder Frenkie de Jong in central defence against Cadiz.
With Oriol Romeu arriving, Garcia won’t find much time as a defensive midfielder either, which limits his first-team opportunities.
Inigo Martinez took part in a full training session this week and will surely vault Garcia on the depth chart moving forward.
With Frenkie de Jong capable of playing as a central defender, as well as Marcos Alonso, there really is no space for Garcia this year.
So while Garcia is still only 22-years-old and extremely talented, his opportunity to develop his skill set will be severely limited this year. It may be an option to send him on loan for a year to ensure that he gets game time.
This will be an interesting story to watch over the coming days.
