FC Barcelona had to swim in shallower pools this summer when it came to transfer targets.

Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez arrived on free transfers and Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo arrived on loan. The only player to warrant a transfer fee was Oriol Romeu, who joined Barca for just €3.4 million.

The financial situation at the club meant President Joan Laporta had to be smart with his business, and his actions have allowed the club to drastically reduce their wage bill in accordance with La Liga’s financial fair play regulations.

But Barcelona being Barcelona, there were plenty of transfer rumours involving the club. Now one of those targets may be available.

Tottenham looking to sell FC Barcelona target in January

According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham are open to selling attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, a player FC Barcelona were reportedly very interested in over the summer.

A big never materialised for the midfielder, and it was believed that Spurs were seeking a transfer fee that Barcelona couldn’t meet.

The arrival and performance of James Maddison from Leicester have convinced Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou that the club can move on from the Argentinian playmaker.

Lo Celso has missed most of the season with injury and won’t be available for the North London derby tomorrow.

The midfielder arrived in London from Real Betis in 2020 for a fee north of €40 million and has managed eight goals and six assists in 84 games for Spurs.

He spent last season on loan at La Liga rivals Villareal where he scored 2 goals with 3 assists in 29 games.

With Lo Celso set to enter the final 12 months of his contract in June 2024, it’s believed that Spurs will look to sell him in January to maximise the financial return.

It’s unclear if Barcelona still hold an interest, especially with attacking midfielder Fermin Lopez impressing so much in the pre-season.
