Although the 1-0 loss to Alaves denied Barcelona a 100-point season. It perhaps provided something even more valuable for the 2026/27 campaign: an undiluted insight into Alvaro Cortes.

Cortes is not a teenage wonder like Pau Cubarsi or Lamine Yamal but the next level of mature, polished talent to emerge from La Masia who is a "ready-made" professional, the exact sort Hansi Flick needs in his high-intensity system.

Following his full debut against Alaves, one thing is for sure: Barcelona has finally found its third central defender.

Cortes' profile: Physical prowess meets technical intelligence

Cortes is physically imposing at 6'3", offering the kind of presence that Barcelona have missed defensively this season. His height, however, only scratches the surface of what Cortes has to offer.

During his captaincy of Barca Atletic, the young centre-back has earned a reputation as "the technical monster": a player with the same aggressive, fearless mentality as the legendary Puyol, combined with the technical intelligence of Gerrard Pique.

What Cortes brings to the table

A wand of a left foot: A naturally left-footed centre-back like Cortes offers natural angles to exploit down the left-flank, perfect for creating space for the left-back and left-winger.

Elite recovery pace: Cortes has enough speed to maintain the high line Flick desires, despite his size.

A tactical mastermind: Even those who have shared dressing rooms with Cortes attest to his playing maturity being "five years older". He reads the striker's movement before a pass and this was evident against Alaves. He also picked up 10 clearances on Mendizorroza.

Cortes by numbers vs Alaves

The raw stats were all top-drawer, with Cortes racking up more touches than any other Barcelona player and finishing with a 7.2 rating according to FotMob.

  • Touches: 109 (Led the entire back four)
  • Pass Completion: 95% (88/93)
  • Long Passes: 5/9 successful (Proved he is capable of bypassing midblocks)
  • Defensive Actions: 10 clearances, 3 recoveries, 1 interception
  • Duels: 8/13 won (62%)

Tactical fit: A Hansi Flick-type centre back

Flick is adamant that his centre-backs will play at least 40 yards from his own goal, and against Alaves Cortes proved his nerve under pressure. He was never beaten in a 1-on-1 duel all game and seems comfortable receiving the ball facing his own goal in such situations.

Between Ronald Araujo (who has often been linked with moves away from the club) and Andreas Christensen's return from injury, the emergence of Cortes provides the strength and intelligence for Flick to rotate his backline without a reduction in the team's tactical output.

Conclusion: First team ready?

It has been reported from within training that Flick was very impressed with how well Cortes has been integrated into the squad, and he will surely be a part of next season's pre-season tour. While Cubarsi may be the conductor of the defence, Cortes can undoubtedly become the enforcer.

And even if Barcelona fail to lure a big name left-centre back this summer, there is no need for concern. La Masia has once again produced a solution, this time in the form of Alvaro Cortes.
