This just doesn’t happen in modern football these days. Andreas Christensen has put pen to paper and signed a contract extension at FC Barcelona until 30th June 2028.

We've already covered this exclusive news months ago, but it has finally become official. The Danish defender’s initial contract at the Nou Camp was set to expire in 2026, but this extension ties him down for a further two years to the Catalan outfit. However, the terms of this deal are what’s really raising the eyebrow.

More than 50% pay cut to wear the badge

While other top professionals are desperate to grab the highest wages they can get, Christensen decided to take a more noble route. The central defender has taken an eye-watering cut of more than 50% of his basic salary to stay at the club, dropping from around €12m a season to €5-6m.

He had significant offers from the Premier League, Italy and Saudi Arabia, but has opted to stay loyal to the badge and his belief in Hansi Flick’s sporting project at Barcelona.

  • Performance bonus: The new contract is based more on playing time and performance-related bonuses that could see his yearly salary increase to anywhere between €8-9m.
  • Escape clause: There is a mutual termination clause inserted into the contract, which both parties can trigger after the 2026/27 campaign to revisit the agreement.

How it helps Flick’s defence

Securing a proven, quality defender at a vastly reduced price tag is a huge coup for a Barcelona board perpetually battling with strict La Liga restrictions.

When fit, the 30-year-old possesses excellent tactical awareness and is an extremely accomplished player on the ball. He arrived from Chelsea in 2022 and has made 98 appearances for Barcelona, helping them to three La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey.

He missed nearly six months of action with a severe knee injury last season, but he now appears to be fully fit and heading into his fifth season at Camp Nou completely refreshed. He will likely serve as a much-needed rotation figure in a defence which lacks genuine depth.
