The whole 150 million Julian Alvarez transfer debacle has devolved completely into a public shambles. After the official bid from Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid came out with a 5 point extended public statement.

The club decided against professional market-speak in favor of mocking Florentino Perez, insulting FC Barcelona, and accusing Real Madrid of raiding the club's youth academy.

The 5-point mockery

Initially, Real Madrid had made it seem like they made the 150 million offer in the spirit of good relations between the two clubs. The rebuttal from Atletico blew that illusion completely out of the water and set the tone for highly unprofessional and hostile interactions.

The 5 main, aggressive points made by the Metropolitano in their public statement toward their neighbors:

  • The PR edit: Atletico said Real Madrid had attempted to manipulate the media and stated "They cut out the part of the Pope's video where he said he was an Atletico fan too."
  • Zero respect: After an attempt from Real to make it seem like the two clubs had good relations, Atletico bluntly stated "You must have confused education with gratitude, but just so there are no doubts: we are not thankful for anything."
  • The market freeze: The Metropolitano said the transfer was off completely, "We neither study nor consider any offer for Julian."
  • The stray shot at Barcelona: Atletico finished off by insultingly mocking both clubs at once, "How can we not have a good relationship, when you make us laugh even more than FC Barcelona does."
  • The academy accusation: In a final, shocking postscript to the statement, Atletico attacked Real Madrid's youth recruitment, "Using the good relationship with your new president, we can finally check if you will stop 'stealing' from our Academy. Thank you very much, realmadrid!"

Effect on the squad & Flick's plans

This chaotic atmosphere forces Deco into an administrative mess. Hansi Flick desperately needs a top striker but Barcelona are in no position to engage in a bidding war controlled by schoolboy taunts.

  • The unprofessionality of it all: The board now have concrete evidence that Atletico Madrid is acting more like internet trolls than a professional club. Engaging in any discussions with the club, whose board publicly mocks their rivals in unrelated press conferences, will be a waste of administrative time.

What's next for Barcelona

Barcelona needs to remove themselves from this Spanish drama as quickly as possible. Going into a bidding war against a release clause of 500 million, due to Real Madrid publicity stunt is financial suicide.

Deco must form new strategy for this operation and the entire Julian Alvarez transfer. If need be, he must be ready to find a new, serious target and avoid a club that is too unprofessional for serious talks.
