If we remember correctly, Barcelona were really in the market for a left sided centre back and there were rumours that Barcelona were targetting a young centreback with high potential to fill in that role. But now we have come to know the truth. According to Fernando Polo, Barcelona launched a direct approach to sign FC Twente's 18-year-old central defender, Ruud Nijstad, but completely abandoned the operation.

Although the teenager was willing to force a move to Camp Nou, FC Twente remained firm on their asking price, unequivocally rejecting a £8 million offer from Deco.

The valuation gap

The 6 ft 5 inch left-footed center-back Nijstad, had been on Barcelona's radar in the previous weeks. The sporting department were convinced the young international possessed the caliber and a vast potential to become a next generation ball-playing defender.

However, the £8 million was an offer the Eredivise side were not willing to entertain. FC Twente hold Nijstad at approximately £10 million but their long-term aspirations suggest the defender will one day command double figures if a Premier League side come calling for their talented young ace. Twente are said to even believe he could fetch as much as £50 million.

Knowing the gap was unbridgeable in the remaining time of the transfer window, and with the Dutchman having a contract that will see him at the club until 2029, Deco and Barcelona board put an end to any prolonged negotiation.

Existing squad is enough

Deco did not pursue a back-up candidate, or attempting to close the £2 million valuation gap from the Netherlands and proceed with the squad they currently have available.

As a matter of fact, La Masia graduate Brian Farinas is now registered as a first-team player and will wear the number 4.

The Blaugrana will continue to rely on their existing defensive talent and those who have graduated from La Masia in to help ease the tough scheduling and complete Hansi Flick's project for the current campaign.
