According to Barcelona's official medical bulletin, Eric Garcia is expected to miss up to four weeks with a rectus femoris strain in his right thigh while Kounde has suffered a left ankle sprain which will see him miss the game against PSG and casts doubt over his participation in Sunday's El Clasico against Real Madrid.
Worst timing for Hansi Flick's backline
For Culers, this double blow could not have arrived at a worse moment. Facing PSG in Europe followed immediately by Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou requires absolute defensive perfection, yet Flick has just lost two of his most trusted pillars in a single stroke.
Eric Garcia, who has been vital in his dual role as a ball-playing defender alongside Pau Cubarsi and a right-back, has been one of their most consistent performances this season. Losing the 25-year-old to an injury for up to a month would leave them short in both positions heading into their toughest games of the season.
Meanwhile, Jules Kounde brings dynamism and quickness to the Barca backline that has been key for Barcelona. His physicality and ability to carry the ball forward are attributes that Hansi Flick will find extremely difficult to replace when facing the likes of PSG and Real Madrid.
How Barcelona can cover their defensive holes
With both defenders ruled out of Tuesday's game against PSG, Hansi Flick must come up with a new defensive system. Having played both Kounde and Garcia in a right-back role, Flick now finds himself in a tricky position with his defensive options.
The most likely short-term solution will be to move Joao Cancelo back into the right-back role with either Xavi Espart or Gerard Martin covering at left-back. Whatever line-up Flick decides on, the 2nd choice defenders will have to deal with some of the most dangerous attacking players in Europe without their two most trusted defenders.
While Garcia is expected to be out for the duration of the November international break, all eyes will be on Kounde's ankle as he races against time to recover and avoid missing Sunday's Clasico tie against Real Madrid. With Vinicius Junior set to be absent through suspension, a fit Kounde will be vital to maintaining the high defensive line needed to frustrate the Spanish giants.
