Barcelona has struggled to fill the void at the heart of their defense since Iñigo Martínez departed for Saudi Arabia, a move that left a significant leadership gap and lack of experience throughout the current campaign.

Gerard Martín has performed admirably to paper over the cracks, providing much-needed stability during a period of transition. Meanwhile, Eric García has been exceptional throughout the first half of the season, forming a disciplined partnership with Pau Cubarsí. Together, they have managed to keep the defense remarkably tight, with the club close to winning the Spanish Super Cup and La Liga again.

Barcelona’s exits from the Champions League and Copa del Rey exposed a key weakness: a lack of experience in central defence. Costly moments, like Atlético’s second goal in the first leg and untimely red cards, highlighted the need for a leader who understands high-stakes football and can manage elite-level pressure.

That is why links to Alessandro Bastoni make perfect sense. With uncertainty surrounding Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen, Bastoni offers a proven, composed, and experienced solution, exactly what Barcelona need to strengthen their backline.

The no-brainer

Alessandro Bastoni would be an excellent fit for Barcelona because he aligns perfectly with the club’s long-standing emphasis on ball-playing defenders. As a naturally left-footed centre-back, he brings balance to the build-up phase and offers a reliable outlet when progressing the ball from deep.

His ability to carry possession forward and play incisive, line-breaking passes would add a new dimension to Barcelona’s attack, particularly against low-block teams. Just as importantly, his composure under pressure ensures he can maintain structure and make smart decisions, even in high-intensity situations.

Defensively, like any Italian international centre back, Bastoni’s intelligence sets him apart. He excels at reading the game, anticipating danger early, and positioning himself to intercept passes or cut off attacking lanes before threats fully develop. This proactive approach makes him ideally suited to Barcelona’s high defensive line, where quick decision-making and awareness are essential.

Deco and Laporta may never read this, but the message is simple: go and bring him to Barcelona.
