As Robert Lewandowski is on his way out of the club this summer, the need to sign a long-term number nine is paramount for Barcelona. Sporting Director Deco has already begun the process of determining the next stage of the club's attacking project.
Sport reports that Barcelona have compiled an eight-man shortlist, encompassing both world-class established stars and bright teenage prospects.
The dream target: Julian Alvarez
The number one target for the board is Julian Alvarez, who offers the mobility and finishing that Hansi Flick needs with his high pressing system. Unfortunately, finances appear to have made this move near impossible, with Atletico Madrid likely demanding more than €100M for the Argentine and having no desire to strengthen a direct rival.
The top alternative: Joao Pedro
If Alvarez can't be signed, Joao Pedro becomes Deco's preferred backup option, providing a modern profile in attack which is perfectly suited for the club's fluidity on the ball. He can play as a center forward or as an attacking midfielder. But his massive fee, in line with Chelsea's valuation of the Brazilian, makes him extremely difficult to pursue.
Premier League alternative: Omar Marmoush
Barcelona have also considered Manchester City striker Omar Marmoush as a potential option. This season he has struggled to break into the first team, but City could demand more than €60M for his services. Marmoush's pressing qualities and versatility make him an interesting option, though not one at the absolute top of the club's priority list.
The elite veterans: Harry Kane and Lautaro Martinez
Two big names for an immediate goal injection:
Harry Kane: Instant goals and identical style of play to what Barcelona desires from their number 9. However, there doesn't appear to be any desire on Kane's part to move.
Lautaro Martinez: Familiar entity in Catalan offices, he provides tactical and leadership input to a forward line that is currently lacking such attributes. He also possesses the experience and ability for a top tier striker.
The value and profile question marks: Vlahovic and Osimhen
Dusan Vlahovic- Easiest deal on the paper with his contract running down. However, he has raised questions about his tactical fit, as well as on-pitch discipline, for the Sporting Department.
Victor Osimhen: He is one of the purest goalscorers at his peak. However the board has some concerns over his fit with Flick's style of play, and Galatasaray will want an astronomical fee for him.
The future bet: Eli Junior Kroupi
The youngest player on the shortlist, 19-year-old Eli Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth. The French youngster has taken the Premier League by storm with 12 league goals this season. The Sporting Department see him as an elite talent but not one that could fit the starting eleven immediately.
This is likely another tricky negotiation with the club wanting more than €100M for their prized youngster.
What to expect
It will be a chaotic summer at the Camp Nou as Barcelona deal with their financial limitations to try and bring in an adequate replacement for their iconic Polish hitman.
Whether the club gets the blend of short-term goalscoring ability and long-term value right in this transfer window will make or break Deco sporting decisions.
