It is official. Robert Lewandowski is set to leave Barcelona at the end of the season. Sunday against Betis will be Lewandowski's last game at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Four years, three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey and three Spanish Supercups; the biggest debate being held in fan spaces around the world is whether he is a legend. There really shouldn't be.
The man that came when nobody serious would
If we go back to the summer of 2022, Barcelona were financially devastated. They needed four 'economic levers' to even register the players they had and Xavi had inherited a squad lacking its spine, whilst the club was tarnished in the transfer window.
Lewandowski still came. He was 33 years old, in his prime for a striker, and had Bayern Munich willing to keep him. The choice was his. The motivations are arguable: whether it was for the Ballon d'Or or a final adventure. What cannot be disputed is that Lewandowski chose the project when hardly any world-class player would have done.
The impact of this decision was immeasurable, sending a statement to the market that Barcelona weren't finished.
What the numbers actually say
- 190 appearances
- 119 goals
- 24 assists
- 143 goal contributions
- 3x La Liga winner
- 1x Copa del Rey winner
- 3x Spanish Supercup winner
- Averaged a goal contribution every 1.33 games over four seasons
He scored 23 La Liga goals in his first season at Barcelona in 2022/23 driving them to a title, and he was 34 years old at the time! Even last year, he added 19 in the league. These aren't the numbers of a player sitting on his reputation.
UCL absence a fair criticism?
This is the closest to nuance that comes with Lewandowski at Barcelona. He has not won a Champions League with the Blaugrana and reaching the semi-finals at the 2024/25 season where he was knocked out by Inter Milan is as close as he has got. For a striker of his caliber, it's a valid frustration.
But to blame Lewandowski for Barcelona's struggles in Europe over the past couple of seasons is absurd. Hansi Flick had only just inherited a squad that was far from ready for European success. A young defence and an early stage of Lamine Yamal's development alongside tight finances meant this was always a project.
Ballon d'Or obsession
Yes, part of the reason he came was his Ballon d'Or obsession. Although he was awarded it in spirit in 2020 before COVID cancelled the ceremony. He also narrowly lost it to Benzema in 2022. It's no secret he wanted the Ballon d'Or trophy and it still didn't materialize at Barcelona either.
To use that as an excuse to devalue what Lewandowski has done for Barcelona is completely backwards. The Ballon d'Or is one player and one award, for one season. What Lewandowski gave Barcelona over four seasons were consistent, professional, relentless performances at the exact moment they were needed most.
He hasn't come here to coast to retirement. If we observe his pressing under Flick's 4-2-3-1 system, something he was still doing until he turned 35-36. This isn't a player who was just happy to live it up in Spain.
Where does he stand in Barcelona's history?
Unlike some other club, the label 'legend' in Barcelona isn't just reserved for number of trophies won. It goes much deeper. It's about respect, contributions and loyalty towards the club. Messi is a legend. Ronaldinho is a legend. Even Neymar, who left Barcelona under controversial and abrupt circumstances, earned his place in the discussion.
Lewandowski gave Barcelona four years, 119 goals and a restoration of the identity of a club that had truly lost its way.
He arrived during their lowest period and he leaves with the club as champions of Spain, and with a young side transformed by Hansi Flick into genuine European contenders. This is perhaps his most underrated contribution; he held the line whilst the club was being rebuilt.
The fact that there is still noise from certain parts of the fanbase is just ridiculuous. Robert Lewandowski is a modern Barcelona legend. The numbers say so, the trophies say so, the situation of when he arrived for the club says it the loudest of all.
