Barcelona did lose at Mendizorroza in May, albeit this came after the La Liga title had already been secured, and had won six successive meetings with Alavés beforehand. Los Albiazules' last win over Barça in Catalonia came in 2016, losing eight out of nine since then.

Barcelona vs Deportivo Alavés match preview

After back-to-back defeats, can Barcelona get back in the groove of scoring plenty of goals and winning matches? Last Sunday night, Barça were seeking to become the first side in Primera División history to start a season with ten wins out of ten. However, in a bit of a surprise, it was Real Madrid who were 2-1 winners at Camp Nou, with Kylian Mbappé snatching the points three minutes from time.

Before this, Hansi Flick's side had seen their flawless start to the campaign come to an end at the Parc des Princes, beaten 4-2 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. The justification was that Flick was prioritising the Clásico, but when you lose that as well, it's not ideal.

Despite these set backs, Barça do remain two points ahead of Atlético Madrid and three above Real Madrid, with next Sunday's visit to the Metropolitano, another key clash, looming large. Before then expect the Blaugrana to pick up three points on Saturday night.

Deportivo Alavés though are likely to prove to be difficult opponents. Quique Sánchez Flores' side kick off in seventh place, flirting with the European spots, following a solid start. Last Friday night, Aitor Mañas' 89th minute goal rescured a draw when Málaga visited Mendizorroza.

Before this, Alavés had suffered back-to-back defeats, including a narrow 2-1 loss against Atlético, in which they had the points snatched away right at the death. Los Albiazules have overall conceded just 11 goals this season, the same number as Barça, so will not be easy to swat aside, meaning Barcelona may only score three or four, rather than their usual five.

Barcelona team news

Hansi Flick is very short of defenders right now, given that Andreas Christensen, Eric García, Jules Koundé, Xavi Espart are all sidelined. Thus, after coming on during the Clásico, forgotten man Alejandro Balde will get the nod at left-back, while Mundo Deportivo claim that Frenkie de Jong will be deployed alongside Pau Cubarsí; we shall see.

With Aston Villa to come on Tuesday, key figures like Raphinha, Anthony Gordon, Pedri and Rodri could be rested, so Gabriel Jesus, Gavi and Marc Bernal are among those hoping to be rotated in.

Deportivo Alavés team news

No such prioritising other matches for Quique Sánchez Flores, who had had over a week to prepare for this trip to Camp Nou. Lucas Boyé and Mariano Díaz, who once scored in a Clásico win for Real Madrid, will lead the attack, with Carles Aleñá facing his former club.

Predicted Line-ups

  • Barcelona predicted lineup: García; Cancelo, Cubarsí, de Jong, Balde; Bernal, Gavi, Fermín; Lamine Yamal, Adeyemi, Jesus.
  • Deportivo Alavés predicted lineup: Sivera; Koski, Tenaglia, Yusi; Pérez, Ibáñez, Aleñá, Blanco, Rebbach; Díaz, Boyé.

  • Score prediction: Barcelona 3-0 Deportivo Alavés.
