Barcelona's season hinges on their performance over the next six weeks. Should they emerge from the fixtures between now and end of February unscathed, the momentum could carry them to the finish line and holding their trophies again.

The Blaugranas will have to balance the challenges of La Liga and the Copa del Rey with a demanding Champions League schedule, which will likely include an additional two-legged playoff round.

After last season's success, Hansi Flick and the squad are under pressure to maintain the domestic standard, ensuring Barcelona remains the benchmark in Spanish football ahead of Real Madrid, and a resurgent Atletico and Villarreal.

We look at what lies ahead in the coming weeks for Barcelona as their schedule could determine this year's success

La Liga

It’s a two-horse race; Atletico Madrid are distant and Villarreal lack the experience for a title charge. Barcelona and Real Madrid remain the primary contenders for the title. However, Real Madrid are currently struggling following Xabi Alonso’s departure and the appointment of an inexperienced successor.

Throughout January and early February, Barcelona’s schedule offers an opportunity to extend their lead, with an away match against Real Sociedad being their toughest test. Conversely, Real Madrid face a more difficult run with away games at Villarreal and Valencia, plus a home fixture against Real Sociedad, providing multiple opportunities to drop points.

By mid-February, Barcelona could extend their lead from four points to seven or eight, or further. This would put the title in their control ahead of the El Clasico at Camp Nou and their away match against Atletico Madrid.

Copa del Rey

Barcelona remain favorites for the Copa del Rey, with their odds shortening following Real Madrid’s shock exit to Albacete. The remaining clubs in the competition will feel encouraged by Madrid’s departure, sensing a clearer path to the final and an opportunity for domestic glory. Sides such as Real Betis, Athletic Club and Valencia will all fancy their chances of lifting the trophy, among the other clubs.

Atlético Madrid stand out as Barcelona’s most serious challengers, and the Catalans will be keen to avoid them, particularly in an away tie, despite having already beaten them earlier this season.

The quarter-final draw will take place tomorrow (19 January). While Barcelona will hope for a favourable matchup, a home tie against Atlético could present a valuable opportunity to eliminate a major rival in a single-leg contest rather than over two legs.
